The
Dental/Oral Sex Dam
What is a dental/oral
sex dam?
A dental/oral
dam is basically a small sheet of latex which acts as a barrier
between
the vagina or anus and the mouth: Cunnilingus
or analingus.
Dental dams get their name because
they
are used during dental surgery such as root canals. Due to the possible
infectious secretions from both the vagina and anus, the dental dam is
becoming a more popular safer sex tool.
How effective are
dental dams?
Dental dams or oral
sex dams are
an extremely effective
means of preventing infection from vaginal or anal secretions. There is
little data available on rates of infection after use of the dental
dam.
There are a few important concerns which may reduce the effectiveness
of
the barrier. Before you use the dam, lightly rinse it off with warm
water.
Dry with a towel. Then check to be sure the dam is free of holes or
breakage.
You can check the dam before you use it by holding it up to light or
seeing
if water is able to pass through it. Finally, ensure that only one side
of the dam comes in contact with the genitals, and that the dam is used
only once. Otherwise you are defeating the whole purpose of using the
dam
in the first place.
Only use water based
lubricants (we recommend Wet
Original )
when
using
dental dams.
How do you use dental
dams?
- Do not use expired
dental dams or dental dams that are yellowed, brittle, sticky, or have
holes.
- If you have oral-anal sex
or oral-vaginal sex, use a new dental dam each time to reduce the risk
of transmitting disease.
- Handle a dental dam
carefully so as not to damage it with fingernails, teeth, or other
sharp objects.
- Rinse off any powder
that's on the dam.
- Water-based lubricant may
be used on the vulva or anus of your partner before using the dam to
increase sensitivity.
- Place and hold the dam
against the vulva or anus of
the receiving partner. Some will stay in place (like Glyde Dams).
- Dental dams can only be
used once, so after you are
done, wrap the used dental dam in tissue and throw
it away. Do not put it into the toilet, since it can
clog plumbing.
cunnilingus - oral/vaginal sex
|
rimming - oral/anal sex
|
Dental dams are
relatively easy to use. Remember to use some water based lubricant
on the vagina or anus beforehand to increase the amount of stimulation
received.
We recommend the brand name: Sheer Glyde DamsĀ®
Are specially designed as a barrier for use
while
performing cunnilingus (oral/vaginal sex) or oral/anal sex (rimming).
When properly used, may help
reduce the risk of catching
or spreading many sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) such as
syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia infections, genital herpes and AIDS.
However, they cannot eliminate the risk.
During Intimate contact, lesions and various body
fluids can
transmit STD's. Therefore, the Sheer Glyde Dam
should be applied each
and every time before such contact occurs.
Directions:
- Remove Sheer Glyde Dam and lay it flat
covering the entire
vulva, covering both the vaginal opening and clitoris, hold the edges
of the dam. For oral/anal, cover anus using a new Sheer Glyde Dam.
- (Optional: Moisten the vulva or anal area
with any
commercially available water-based lubricant before putting the dam in
place, taking care not to leave lubricant on your fingers. Lubricant on
the fingers may make it difficult to hold Sheer Glyde Dam in place.)
- Always use a new dam if you switch from
oral/anal to
oral/vaginal sex to reduce the risk of infection from harmful anal
germs.
- Do not stretch the dam.
- Do not expose to direct sunlight. Heat
and light accelerate
the degradation of latex film.
- Store in a cool, dry place, at room
temperature (59-86
degrees F)
- Sheer Glyde Dams are not for sharing.
- Dispose of after single use in the
original packaging.
